BATM Snaps Up Metrobility

BATM Advanced Communications Ltd. has snapped up Ethernet access vendor Metrobility Optical Systems for just $6.85 million in cash, primarily as a way to expand into North and Latin America.

BATM, better known as Telco Systems (BATM) , already has metro Ethernet and Ethernet aggregation products in its portfolio. Buying Metrobility adds Ethernet access capabilities to its arsenal.

And it seems to be getting a lot for its money. Metrobility, which claims to have more than 50 customers, generated revenues of $11.8 million for a pre-tax loss of $1.2 million in 2005. BATM reckons that, once integrated, Metrobility will make a "positive contribution" to its business, which made a small operating profit of $1.4 million from revenues of $56.5 million in 2005.

Access211N wins 2006 Editors Choice Award from Service Provider Weekly

There are many products on the market today that allow you integrate VoIP (Voice over IP) technology with existing analog phone systems however many of these products have a pretty steep price tag attached to them. Telco Systems has developed a small device that gives small business home office (SOHO) locations with an affordable solution to this type of product and the Access211N wins our Editor's Choice Award for price and functionality.

There are many functions that are provided by the Acess211N and this includes the device's router capabilities. An incoming WAN port connects with your cable or DSL service provider and a single 10/100Base-T Ethernet port can be used to connect directly with a PC or with a switch product. There are two FXS ports to connect with local telephone lines from your phone company and the device provides the technology of translating data between digital and analog signals that is needed for this type of product.

Our motto is "To make ideas possible"

An Info Week interview with Dr. Zvi Marom.

Dr. Zvi Marom is the founder and CEO of BATM Advanced Communications. Dr. Marom started the company in 1992 as a bootstrap and brought it to a world-class company, exporting nearly 100M$ a year.
Dr. Zvi Marom holds Degrees in Engineering and Medicine.
Prior to the establishing of BATM Dr. Marom was the head of the Electrical faculty of Israeli Open University and senior consultant to several industrial and academic institutes. Zvi Marom graduated with excellence from the Naval Academy and served in combat command posts.
In 2001 Dr. Marom won the “Techmark Personality of the Year” award from the London Stock Exchange.
Under his leadership BATM won “Best Technology Company in Europe for 2000, as well as several other world renowned awards.

Dr. Marom, would you present the activities of your company ?
BATM Advanced Communicatins is the mother company of Telco Systems in the USA. Company is public, trading in the main list in the London stock exchange. The company is specialized in telecom application devices in the access for modern IP networks and integration for legacy networks to moderner IP. We work with Nokia, Alcatel, Siemens, SBC, British telecom, Deutsche telecom, and many others company in the telecom area. We have 500 employees in 11 countries like USA, Germany, Hong-Kong, East Europe etc.
We are international company – in Bulgaria we started nearly 6 years ago and now have 60 people staff. Here we started a program about 2 years ago for young people that have the capability and the willingness to learn. We train them to take them after the university. Now after 5 years we have started to work not only in technical work, but also in leadership, like ability to run projects, ability to train others. We are expanding operation with several universities in here, with The New Bulgarian University for example, and our intention is also to get involved as much as we can, to increase this we employee here several intensive people and intend to increase the number. We need people, that know well how, that want to succeed, see the future in professional computing, networking, environments. We are the only one in Bulgaria, that we give this kind of opportunity and this kind of really know-how. And this kind of demands also, in return we give lot of opportunities.

Can you define a motto of your company?
We think that we are a top professionals in modern communications. We are bunch of scientists and engineers. We’ve been recognized by guys like Nokia. We have a basic simple philosophy, which drives the strategy of the company and this is the reason why will never been able to be crushed by the really big boys.
If you have to define people, you can define them in what you see and in what you talk about. If we can duplicate this with tehnology and science and give this ability, it would change everything that we know in all that we call modern. All the social-ecomomic consepts are going to change so hudge knowledge based. We start to see with the internet revolution. Communication possibilities that look imaginary only fifteen years ago.
And with the next revolution, which is the broadband revolution, the ability to communicate changes everything – it will affect travel, it will affect governments, it will affect media. People become mobile. I think that if we can deliver this microcosmos in a kind of nearly intact way, it takes time we are doing a lot of improvements, then we will be a part of this enormous social-economical world change. The fact is that the devices we are building for the all big boys are devices that rarely other people can do it. So basically we are kind of enablers on their, I would call it - scientific technological side. And this is why we need all the time a combination between people that are in the experience and people that are in the 20s, that have a lot of inovative young ideas. And this is why I am all the time thinking and doing a lot of cooperation with some of the universities worldwide.
So the motto of the company is “to enable”. To make things possible, to make ideas possible.

Which is the contract of the company, that you appreciate most?
Several pretty interesting contracts. I like the cooperation with Nokia. Finland is a small country like Israel, like Bulgaria. People are modest, they learn things very, very well, they look in depth. When we do cooperation with Nokia it’s not just giving a kind of advanced equipment. It’s many time brain storming. I can say that hudge company like Nokia listen to us very carefull in many cases. For our company the result was to a status worldwide supply of the infrastructure of the networks. We enjoy to work with them, we see that the way of behaving and the philosophy are quite similar to us.
We will introduce some revolutionary technology together with Nokia just recently that we didn't even bother to publish yet. You can say first in Bulgaria.

Your expectations for the development of the communication market?
Well, communication market will have enermous boom in my opinion, in the next 5 years worldwide. First in big developing countries like China, India. At the very same time at the most advanced market in the world like the US. All countries will modernize the communication. One, broadband is replacing narrowband. Now more and more people add broadband to their homes, offices. Few years ago people used to have only telephone. Now the more bands that you have, the more applications that you use, the more applications that you use – the more bands that you use, the more bands that you use – the more equipment, software, the carrier is to buy in order to support its services. The reason number two is the Internet, which means communication. And last but not least is the mobile revolution. This device is becoming smaller and smaller, it has inside camera, sometimes GPS and so on. When you send pictures or small video models on this device basically you have a situation that the demands from the network a fantastic. Because all of a sudden million small video movies are coming together with millions of telephone calls and together with a lot of Internet quetions. The demand from the network will explode. And this will make the demand for network and devices as well.

Tell us about your plans for future development?
We have some very ambitious plans. One type of plans is technological, scientific-technological and the second type of plans is application-based. The technological side we cooperate with some companies - with the most advanced semiconductor manifacturers in order to enable in technical way enough computing and networking power to do applications that today is nearly impossible in the network. So this is an effort that we will take and we will start to see fruits maybe in the beginning of 2008. But it is very advanced technical capabilities that basically will enable this things. We are not aware of any other company in the world that is doing similar things.
On application side – we introduced a very nice application today together with some people that work together with Skype and we started an operation that we call Kish-Kish. It is in a language that doesn't exist any more, it is called Arameic and it means to talk a lot, to make a lot of noise. If you would go to the website of Kish-kish, which is relatively very young, it enables you a lot of things from Skype that normally are services that you get from the normal telephone company. Like answering machine, like using Skype on your mobile, all kind of things. Basically it saves you money and gives you lots of fun. We are going to expand this and already we have several customers, it is very new stuff, we have just introduced it less than two months ago. But it seems that a lot of people that belong to the Skype community like it. So go to the Kish-kish and look at it. So we think that it is our experiment to take our knowledge on the technology side to the application side.
